Ireland - 1996
In 1996, with little to no idea of what we were doing, we set sail to Ireland for our first-ever bike tour. As the sun dipped below the horizon and the evening drew in our train took us from London Euston to Holyhead in Wales. An overnight ferry crossing and a 6 am start for two hungry and sleep-deprived 19-year-olds was not the ideal start. Nevertheless, our (mostly) trusty steads provided memories aplenty and surprisingly few saddle sores. The legendary hospitality of the Irish people was never in doubt as we camped in back gardens, hitchhiked with Rastafarians, played pool in hay sheds, fueled ourselves on tomato sandwiches (eaten purely out of politeness and hunger!) and David eventually found love, elbow deep in washing-up, in a kitchen in County Laois.
