Day 27 - 30th July 2022

Maslin RA

to Port Augusta

David's Journal Entry

Most people will see many sunsets in their lifetime, but fewer sunrises. The ruby-red sunrise this morning was something to behold and a fitting start to the end of our arid adventure. We cruised through the desert with rolling hills serving as 'heart starters'. Mike was clearly on a mission as he wanted to get to Port Augusta to see the F & F (his wife and son), although they would not arrive until the evening (perhaps he just wanted to be clean?). We pushed along at 30kmph for a good chunk of the day, especially as the tailwinds picked up and the Flinder's Ranges hove into view.

We had both deliberately depleted our food stocks to lighten the load for the last couple of legs, knowing we were about to find stores aplenty in Port Augusta. This left us without many snacks and so we were both ravenous by the time we pulled into the Arid Botanic Gardens for a late lunch, only 3km from our destination.  When we did eventually land we found ourselves in a very neat little apartment with comfortable beds, a washing machine, a shower and wifi. Bliss. With a rest day planned tomorrow, I will be able to video call Eileen and the boys, who are now in Cornwall, with friends.

After washing up and scouting options for dinner and groceries Mike and I headed to the Flinders Hotel, the most historic-looking pub on an otherwise characterless strip. A quick drink and chat with the new owner/landlord revealed a rich history, although, like many towns of its size and era, it is hard to see a bright future.
