Day 3 - 6th July 2022

Pine Creek

to Katherine

David's Journal Entry

A shorter day today at only 98km. Blustery and full of rolling hills, despite Google's promise of "mostly flat", which is clearly untrue. We encountered several extraordinary flocks of galahs along the road which was also fringed by some very interesting-looking rock formations (I really should learn more geology). Today I set off before Mike, which although a good idea on paper was actually less enjoyable than either of us anticipated, not least because rather than enjoying the solitude, I couldn't help but check my mirror constantly. In any event, Mike had caught me within 20km of starting out, in part due to a slowly deflating tyre and skipping gears. The plan had been to meet at more like 40km but I'm not convinced it is the best option, regardless.

Mike and I decided to lighten our load and boost our carb and protein intake by downing a couple of tins of cold beans with tuna. On paper very unappealing, but in the moment it seemed to satisfy my cravings. Mike on the other hand was less convinced. I suspect he won't be trying this particular combination again.

Katherine wasn't the most welcoming town, as it seemed no one wanted our business, and the hospitality was a little less than typical Aussie. The 4km ride out of the small CBD to the Big 4 campsite was fueled by Coca-cola and pies and took us through some very beautiful scenery. Today we met lots of people on the road including John, who stopped twice and was very keen to chat and show us his fat bike as well as take videos of our set-up to send to his mates.
